We are very pleased and excited to have an artist come all the way from Colorado for his opening this weekend. Matthew Doubek, the self proclaimed "krap master" will bring a load of critters to hang on our wall for his solo show, "Happy Critter Marmalade". The reception for him will be held on Saturday, October 4th from 6-8pm. Check it out, meet the artist, and eat some snacks!
To get to know a little more about Matt, we've asked him a few burning questions. Please read on!
CW: Your paintings appear to be a collaborative process (see picture below). Tell us a little more about how your pieces come to be.
MD: There is always a cold beer in the fridge and a plethora of mark making tools for anyone that stops by the studio. I highly encourage everyone to make marks, scribble, add some collage or whatever tickles your fancy to any piece hanging in the construction zone - those pieces are free reign. My only request is that you bring something as well so I may return the favor.
For instance, the piece "reindeer in Brooklyn" has a building and hand drawn in black on the right hand side, those marks were made by Mr. Alex Henry of Joy Engine. The background collage and under painting were constructed over a period of a year, with the marks of various visitors. Some of them marks get painted over and some make it into other paintings. I am a big fan of making a large under painting then taking that baby to the table saw.
Now a days, I get the best visitor of all - my daughter. She is awesome! Her marks are fantastically free and her ability to cover a large area with one color is awe aspiring, she has guts and courage...hope that rubs off on me.
CW: In addition to your paintings, will your daughter also be available for purchase at your opening?
MD: Thanks! Actually...can't put a price on her!
CW: Ok, fair enough. You also build really cool big things made of metal, right? What is favorite material to work when building 3d stuff?
MD: Metal is one of the many materials I get to play with while working with Scott Parsons at Mobius Stufio. Right now we are in the midst of applying a patina to a 4 story metal spiral staircase inside a 6' diameter tube. We actually did not fabricate this exact one, but we have made our fair share of metal dust.
As for my favorite material - that would be WOOD, oak to be exact - it smells like fine scotch, it's in my blood, my last name Doubek means "little oak" in Czech.
CW: What's your favorite sea creature?
MD: Well, right now that would be Nemo.
CW: Favorite three-course meal?
MD: Anything flavored by the BBQ, then chocolate and more chocolate.
CW: Do you have any art related projects on the horizon that you want to share with us?
MD: I have a few solo shows coming up in Denver, one at Rock the Cradle (rock'n baby/toddler boutique in December and Pirate Contemporary Art Oasis in February as well as a couple group shows one in Minneapolis, gallery 360 and one in Atlanta at the Alcove, plus a slew of art related architectural projects with Scott at Mobius. I think I am going to build a new mailbox stand - I have that itching.
"Reindeer in Brooklyn" by Matthew Doubek will be available for purchase this weekend at the opening!
